Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs)
Many medical and dental schools in the UK use MMIs, a series of short, structured interview stations, each assessing different attributes. Candidates rotate through these stations, facing different scenarios and challenges at each.
MMI stations can include scenarios that assess ethical reasoning, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and interpersonal skills. Candidates typically have 2 minutes at each station to read the question/scenario and 5 minutes to respond. This requires great time managment skills, which is what we focus on when providing mock interviews.
Some stations may also present ethical dilemmas, evaluating ethical reasoning and decision-making abilities, simulated patient interactions, role-play scenarios, or structured tasks to evaluate interpersonal skills such as manual dexterity tasks.
Here are some examples:
- Tell us about your work experience in a medical or healthcare setting.
- How would you build rapport with a patient who is anxious about their diagnosis or treatment?
- How would you contribute to improving patient outcomes and experiences within the NHS?
- You witness a colleague not following proper hygiene protocols. How would you address this issue?
- Can you discuss any specific dental experiences or cases that influenced your decision to study dentistry?
- How would you handle a situation where a patient is non-compliant with your treatment plan?
- Can you discuss the latest advancements or technologies in dentistry that have caught your attention?
- You observe a fellow dental student behaving unprofessionally. How would you handle this situation?
- Imagine you are a dentist working in a community outreach program. A patient has arrived with severe dental pain, and it’s evident that they require immediate attention. However, due to the nature of the outreach setting, you have limited resources and tools available. Your task is to assess the patient’s condition, provide interim relief for their pain, and advise them on follow-up steps.
Panel Interviews
Panel interviews typically involve a group of interviewers, this may include clinicians, academics, and medical/ dental students. This format aims to assess a candidate’s academic knowledge, interpersonal skills, ethical reasoning, and suitability for the profession.
This differs from MMIs as questions are posed by panel members, and the candidate responds in a conversational format, follow up questions might also be asked. Typically, candidates are expected to dedicate 3-5 minutes to respond to each question, and the entirety of most panel interviews is typically concluded within 20 minutes. However, variations in duration may occur, depending on the university and its specific procedures.
Here are some examples:
- How do you stay updated on advancements and current issues in medicine/dentistry?
- Describe a challenging academic situation you faced and how you overcame it.Top of Form
- What ethical considerations should healthcare professionals keep in mind when dealing with patient confidentiality?
- How would you approach breaking difficult news to a patient or their family?
- How do you cope with stress, and what strategies do you employ to maintain a work-life balance?
- Discuss an experience where you demonstrated resilience and adaptability in a professional setting.
- In healthcare, effective teamwork is crucial. Can you share an example from your experiences where effective collaboration led to improved patient outcomes?
- How would you address the growing concerns about mental health among healthcare professionals, and what initiatives could be implemented to support the well-being of medical and dental practitioners?
