Before we delve into specific tips for each section in our upcoming articles, let’s first explore some general strategies that can lay a solid foundation for your UCAT preparation.

  • Start Early and Establish a Routine

Begin your preparation 4-6 weeks before the day of your exam, and establish a regular routine to ensure consistent progress. Starting early gives you enough time to cover all sections of the UCAT thoroughly and build the necessary skills.

  • Use Official UCAT Resources

Use official UCAT resources provided by the exam board. These are specifically designed to familiarise you with the format, content, and difficulty level of the exam. Practise as many questions as possible for each section. https://www.ucat.ac.uk

  • Practise Under Timed Conditions
    • Verbal Reasoning: ≈ 29 seconds per question.
    • Decision Making: ≈ 65 seconds per question.
    • Quantitative Reasoning: ≈ 40 seconds per question.
    • Abstract Reasoning: ≈ 15 seconds per question.
    • Situational Judgement: ≈ 24 seconds per question.

Time pressure is a significant factor in the UCAT, and practising under timed conditions will help you develop the speed and efficiency required to complete each section within the allotted time.

  • Reflection is Key

After every practice session, take the time to review your answers and identify your weaknesses. Reflecting on your performance allows you to check areas where you need improvement and develop strategies to address them effectively. Also, it’s beneficial to revisit questions you’ve answered incorrectly and attempt them again.

  • Use the Flagging Feature

During practise sessions, make use of the flagging feature when you encounter questions you’re unsure about. Flagging allows you to mark questions for later review, enabling you to prioritise your time and focus on answering questions you’re more confident about first.

  • Practise on Desktop Computer

Get accustomed to the exam environment by practising on a desktop computer early on. Practising on a desktop computer will help you adapt to the exam setup and minimise any potential technical difficulties on test day.

  • Avoid Procrastination

It’s crucial not to leave the UCAT until the last minute. Choosing to sit the exam at the end of September may deprive you of valuable time that could be used to prepare the rest of your UCAS application. Plan ahead and allocate sufficient time for UCAT preparation alongside other application requirements.
